Julia Wachsmuth

After completing my carpentry training in 2005, I pursued a degree in communication design. Since 2012, I have been working as a freelance designer and illustrator based in Hamburg.

At Andreas Heller Architects & Designers, I developed immersive room and exhibition concepts for the “Museum Wasserkunst Kaltehofe” and the “Wälderhaus in Wilhelmsburg,” both of which I continued to support as a graphic designer for many years after their opening.
In addition, mostly in collaboration with the company “Effectiv Team,” I have spent many years overseeing advertising film productions and photo shoots, specializing in food styling, liquid styling, and dummy construction. As an experienced dummy builder, drink stylist, and paper artist, I have had the pleasure to work for renowned brands such as Haribo, Penny, Radeberger, Warsteiner, Veltins, Krombacher, Philips, Kühne, Lipton, Mumm, Rotkäppchen Sekt, and Philadelphia, to name just a few. With a keen eye for detail and creativity, I bring products to life and create unique visual concepts for a diverse range of projects.

But my true passion lies in art.
As an artist, I see the world in cycles, with everything interconnected, forming a vast, overarching work of art in which I am allowed to participate. I alter things, break them apart, and then reassemble them, giving them new, unique meaning, if only temporarily, as everything in this world is fleeting. Sometimes I approach my work with a critical eye, while at other times, my creations are purely representational or without explicit meaning.

Just as my materials are complex, I often collect or discover them, enjoying the process of combining different techniques. I love merging the analog with the digital, exploring and uncovering new ways to harness the full spectrum of today’s possibilities. This blend enables me to push the boundaries of both traditional and contemporary art forms.

Through my collaborations with the artist collectives “At the Space Office” and “Strahlentiere,” I have transformed my art into cinematic lighting experiences using projection visual mapping. Stop-motion meets short, bizarre video sequences, overlaid to create new, independent, and random outcomes. This fusion, often presented in a loop, captures the continuous evolution and unpredictable nature of the work.
In my art I strive to create a dynamic interplay between structure and randomness, meaning and meaninglessness, permanence and transience. This perspective not only enriches my artistic practice but also invites viewers to engage with my work on multiple levels, encouraging them to see the world through a lens of perpetual transformation and interconnectedness.
